Frequently Asked Questions

About Shelter Pet Safety Net (SPSN)
What does Shelter Pet Safety Net do for the Bastrop County Animal Shelter (BCAS)?
SPSN works closely with BCAS to identify shelter animals in need of veterinary care. SPSN pays the veterinary bills to give them a chance at adoption. In addition, SPSN helps fund necessary medical equipment and other supplies that the shelter needs. SPSN also works with BCAS to send shelter animals to other rescues by paying transport fees. It is the only organization providing help for both dogs and cats at the shelter.

SPSN has helped pet owners in financial need pay for spay/neuter surgery since 2020. Due to limited budget and overwhelming demand, this program must sometimes be paused until more funds are donated. More information about the program and how to apply can be found here. Spay and Neuter Program

No. SPSN is unable to help individuals with food or veterinary care unless the animal is in an official foster home for SPSN or the Bastrop County Animal Shelter. Visit our pet resource page to get information on other options for help.

Foster parents of animals belonging to the Bastrop County Animal Shelter or SPSN are eligible for assistance from SPSN. Visit Foster page to request a Foster Family Care Package. Medical care for foster animals should be requested via the shelter Foster Coordinator.

SPSN does not have a shelter and does not take in animals from the public. Occasional rescues are done by SPSN volunteers and fostered by those volunteers to reduce the burden on the Bastrop County Animal Shelter (BCAS). Please call BCAS/Bastrop County Animal Control for help with animal rescues.

SPSN works with the Bastrop County Animal Shelter. Information about the shelter can be found here.

Shelter Pet Safety Net is a 501(c)(3) charity that depends entirely on donations.
Our EIN is 84-3309068.

Bastrop County Animal Shelter Helpers was SPSN’s original name. The name was changed to avoid confusion with the shelter’s name, but nothing else about us changed! A separate charity, Friends of the Bastrop County Animal Shelter, had a similar mission and helped the shelter until it ceased operations in 2021.
